Students at Newcastle College and University Center (NCUC) will experience global education in an innovative way as the university moves forward with its international Metaverse learning platform.
As part of the Europe-wide InnoVET initiative, the platform is currently being developed and tested and promises to provide students with an immersive virtual classroom where they can collaborate with peers and educators around the world. Masu.
Metaverse aims to become “the first truly international Metaverse classroom” by eliminating financial and geographic barriers.
The project will bring together the UK's NCUC with five institutions across Europe, including OSAO Koulutuskuntayhtymä in Finland, IES El Rincon in Spain, ROC Horizon in the Netherlands and GBS St.Gallen in Switzerland.
Paul Smith, digital arts lecturer at NCUC and lead on the UK contribution, said: “The Metaverse is not as far away as people think. Many students are already familiar with similar environments through platforms like Roblox.”
“With InnoVET, we are building the first truly international metaverse classroom where students can explore, learn, and collaborate around the world in real time.
“This environment will feature content and courses across common vocational areas and increase awareness of vocational education and training (VET) skills.”
Plans include hosting participating universities in March 2025 to present practical concepts and create personalized avatars for students to participate in collaborative virtual learning.
To further support this work, a funding offer of £320,000 from the Swiss Government is currently under consideration.
John Ridley, Principal of Newcastle University, added: “This innovative project is an industry-leading partnership that will provide students with access to the first international Metaverse classroom.
“This is a great example of the collaborative work we do at Newcastle University University Center, ensuring our graduates leave us work-ready with the skills and experience they need to succeed now and in the future. That's what I'm trying to do.
