Russian authorities are reportedly planning to ban cryptocurrency mining in ten regions from January 1, 2025 and introduce seasonal restrictions in three additional regions as concerns grow over energy shortages.
According to a new report from state-controlled TASS, the full ban will affect regions such as Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, Chechnya and the recently annexed regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson.
The ban will reportedly remain in effect until March 15, 2031.
Additionally, three Siberian regions – Irkutsk, Buryatia and Zabaikalsky – will face seasonal mining restrictions during peak energy consumption periods. These restrictions apply from January to mid-March 2025 and will be extended to November to March in subsequent years.
The measures follow the cryptocurrency mining law signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the end of 2024, which aims to prevent electricity shortages and blackouts. According to TASS, the energy-intensive nature of proof-of-work crypto mining has reportedly put a strain on Russia’s power grid, particularly in regions with limited infrastructure.
