Marathon Digital Holdings is redefining the narrative around Bitcoin mining by repurposing its excess heat to benefit communities in Finland.

This success builds on a pilot project launched in June where Marathon provided heat to 11,000 households in the Satakunta region of Finland. The latest expansion added 67,000 more residents to the heating network.
According to its June statement, the miner uses district heating technology, which offers a practical way to manage the excess heat generated during Bitcoin mining. The system heats the water centrally and routes it efficiently through underground pipes to heat the homes.
According to Companiesmarketcap, Marathon is valued at around $7 billion and is the world’s leading Bitcoin mining company. As the second largest publicly traded company owning Bitcoin, the company holds a prominent position in the crypto space. There are 44,394 BTC secured on its balance sheet.
Interest groups welcome marathon
Venture capitalist Daniel Batten highlighted the importance of this milestone, stating:
“Bitcoin mining heat recycling is no longer an edge case, it is a real thing that is being done on an increasing scale. 80,000 homes heated by Bitcoin mining is significant and just the beginning of what is possible.”
Similarly, Bitcoiner Thomas Brand said this approach mitigates the environmental impact of mining operations and is in line with Finland’s long-term climate goals. He added:
