Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has extended his “fatherly duties” to Moo Deng, the pygmy hippo behind the popular crypto meme.
In a post on Thursday, Buterin said he became Moo Deng’s adoptive father for two years and donated generously to the animal’s welfare. Notably, the Ethereum co-founder donated 10 million Thai baht, worth about $293,000, to care for the pygmy hippo and her family.
Buterin takes over as meme sensation
In the meantime, Vitalik Buterin donated 88 ETH to Khao Kheow Open Zoo, an animal sanctuary based in Thailand. The zoo houses, among others, Moo Deng and her family for conservation purposes.
Khan Kheow Open Zoo confirmed the receipt in a tweet and acknowledged Buterin’s donation. The zoo will use the 10 million THB to support its operations and ongoing wildlife sponsorship program.
Furthermore, Buterin split the payment into two parts and paid out the first 5 million THB on December 26th. According to the statement, the co-founder will complete the donation at an unspecified future date, but within a year of the first payment.
Meanwhile, Vitalik Buterin is known for his donation chains to support wildlife. For comparison, he liquidated all of the “animal coins” in his portfolio in August. donate Proceeds go to the Effective Altruism Fund’s animal welfare fund.
