The Minister of Justice of Montenegro has approved the United States’ request for the extradition of Do Kwon, the notorious founder of Terra (LUNA).
Minister Bojan Bozokiv signed The verdict was announced on December 27th, ending the pending decision. Notably, the US and South Korea have fiercely disputed the extradition of the embattled Terra boss and sought to prosecute him for his alleged involvement in the infamous Terra implosion in 2022.
For comparison, the Terra ecosystem crashed in 2022, wiping billions of dollars from the cryptocurrency market. Its native token, LUNA, plunged from over $100 to almost nothing after algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD de-pegged from dollar valuation.
After losing over $40 billion in cryptocurrency, Do Kwon fled to Serbia before moving to Montenegro. In March 2023, the Montenegrin police arrested he and his partner Han Cheng Jun at Podgorica airport as they tried to flee the country to Dubai.
Justice Minister announces verdict
Notably, the United States and South Korea had previously filed an extradition request for Do Kwon. Prosecutors in both countries wanted to charge the Terra boss for his involvement in the 2022 crash.
Bozokiv built on an earlier ruling by the Supreme Court of Montenegroon the grounds that both the United States and South Korea met the requirements for extraditionstollene Do Kwon from the Southeast European country.
Meanwhile, the attorney general favored the United States. He considered criteria such as the seriousness of the crime, the order of transfer, citizenship and the possibility of further extradition and concluded that Do Kwon would travel to the United States.
