South Korea and the United States are working on a joint research initiative to protect against theft of cryptocurrency holdings through hacks allegedly carried out by hackers from North Korea, the rogue state. The North Korea-backed hacker group Lazarus is reportedly behind some of the biggest hacks of 2024, including the WazirX hack.
More specifically, the US Department of Homeland Security and the South Korean government have signed an agreement to develop technologies that will prevent attacks on cryptocurrency platforms and infrastructure and track stolen digital assets. The research will also examine methods for tracking stolen digital assets and laundering stolen funds, with a particular focus on how these are converted into cryptocurrencies.
