A billion-dollar US bank is warning thousands of customers of a major data breach.
According to a filing with the Maine Attorney General’s Office, 8,358 customers of Citizens Bank – the 16th largest bank in the U.S. by total assets – are affected.
The breach is attributed to “insider misconduct” that is believed to have occurred on October 23, 2023.
According to Citizens Bank, the breach involved highly sensitive customer data.
“Information that may be involved includes your citizen account number(s), social security number, date of birth, or identification information.”
The bank is offering affected customers a two-year membership to an identity theft credit monitoring service.
The incident came two months after the bank suffered a separate security breach.
In October, Citizens Bank described a data breach in which the personal information of around 100 customers was passed on to unauthorized parties.
According to the Federal Reserve, the bank, headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island, currently has total assets of about $220 billion.
